Modern employees are surrounded by alerts.

Emails arrive throughout the day. Phones buzz with notifications. Cybersecurity systems generate warnings. Fleet technology sends driver alerts. Equipment produces alarms. Building systems report changing conditions. Collaboration platforms notify employees about messages, meetings, updates, and assignments.

Each notification may serve a purpose. However, when everything demands immediate attention, employees can begin tuning alerts out.

This is known as alert fatigue, and it can create an overlooked risk for businesses.

When Everything Is Urgent, Nothing Feels Urgent

Alerts are designed to capture attention. The problem begins when employees receive so many that determining which ones actually require action becomes difficult.

Repeated low-priority warnings, unnecessary notifications, and false alarms can condition employees to dismiss alerts automatically. Eventually, an important warning may receive the same response as dozens of routine notifications.

Technology Should Help Employees Prioritize

Adding more alerts is not always the answer.

Businesses should regularly review which systems are generating notifications and determine whether every alert is necessary. Warnings should be prioritized based on urgency and potential impact.

Critical safety, security, or operational alerts should be clearly distinguishable from routine updates. Whenever possible, employees should also understand what an alert means and what action they are expected to take.

An alarm without clear instructions can create confusion rather than improve awareness.

Consider the Human Side of Technology

Technology can identify risks quickly, but people still have to interpret and respond to the information it provides.

This makes human behavior an important part of alert design. If employees regularly ignore a particular warning, businesses should determine why rather than immediately assuming the employee is the problem.

Is the alert occurring too frequently? Is it producing false alarms? Is the message unclear? Does the employee know what action to take? Is the same information already being delivered through another system?

These questions can reveal opportunities to make technology more useful.

Train Employees on What Matters Most

Employees should understand which alerts require immediate attention and which can be addressed later.

Training should include more than explaining how a system works. Employees should know how to respond to cybersecurity warnings, equipment alarms, emergency notifications, fleet alerts, and other messages relevant to their responsibilities.

Businesses should also make it easy to report alerts that appear inaccurate, repetitive, or unnecessary.

Make Alerts Actionable

The goal of an alert should not simply be to notify someone. It should help that person make a better decision.

Review notification settings regularly. Eliminate unnecessary duplication. Prioritize critical warnings. Provide clear instructions. Most importantly, listen to the employees who interact with these systems every day.

Technology is most valuable when it helps people recognize what matters.

In an increasingly connected workplace, the answer may not be more notifications. It may be better notifications delivered at the right time to the right person.
