Driving Safety Tips for Memorial Day

Memorial Day is right around the corner. AAA projects that 39.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this Memorial Day weekend. Compared to last year, this is one million more travelers taking to the roads, skies, rails, and water- the highest travel volume since 2005.

A new survey conducted by Michelin for National Tire Safety Week concluded that long daylight hours and better driving conditions may lull drivers into a false sense of safety during summer months. Two out of three drivers (67 percent) report feeling safer while driving during the summertime, citing better road conditions (83 percent) and nicer weather (81 percent) as reasons.

Despite increased confidence, Memorial Day is the start to the most dangerous season of the year on the road. The National High Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has estimated that more auto accidents occur during the summer months than any other time of year.

It is critical that all drivers understand the risks while driving during summer months. Michelin has offered certain safety tips to help reduce these inherent risks:
  • Give your car a checkup
  • Check your tires
  • Practice safe following distance
  • Focus fully on the road ahead
  • Carry an emergency kit
  • Take breaks during long trips
